I was born and raised in Niles, Ohio. After graduating from Niles McKinley High School, I attended Youngstown State University and finished my B.A. at St. Leo College in St. Leo, Florida, graduating magna cum laude. I received my Master of Public Administration degree from the University of South Florida in Tampa, and my law degree summa cum laude from the University of Akron.

Before beginning the practice of law, I spent many years in law enforcement, starting as a Patrolman in Columbiana, Ohio, then joining the Clearwater, Florida, Police Department, where I rose through the ranks to Captain of the Criminal Investigations Division, and finally serving as Chief of Police in Boardman, Ohio.  My experience included the investigation of fatal traffic crashes, DUI, domestic violence, drug possession and trafficking, child abuse and neglect, rapes and sexual assaults, and homicides.  I taught at Florida Metropolitan University and the YSU Police Academy, and I wrote for the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin and Florida Police Chief magazines.

I began my legal career as an assistant prosecutor for Summit County, Ohio, handling felony cases, and then went into private practice in Akron.  Since then, I have represented both plaintiffs and defendants in personal injury cases arising from automobile accidents, dog bites, slip-and-falls, and black mold.  I have also represented small businesses in business formation, employment matters, and commercial litigation, as well as individuals in consumer sales and debt collection cases. In addition, I have represented criminal defendants in DUI, domestic violence, drug possession, and sex crimes.  I am admitted to practice in the state courts of Ohio, Michigan, and Florida, as well as the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio and the federal Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
