Example of How an Accident Will Change Your Life
The following story is an example of how an accident will change your life. It's based on a true story:
While driving to work, I was severly injured in a very bad car accident. I was taken by a life flight helicopter from the scene of the accident to a hospital where I remained for 5 weeks. I suffered a major head injury and broke ribs in my chest which poked holes in my lungs and collapsed both of them. I slipped into a coma for over 10 days and was kept on a breathing machine and fed with a feeding tube to keep me alive.
The head injury caused me to lose a lot of memory from my childhood. I had multiple exploratory surgeries on my chest and abdomen while I was in a coma to find internal bleeding. In addition to all this, four separate surgeries have been performed on my thigh to repair bone and tissue damage. I am scheduled for at least one more surgery to fully repair the injury.
The police department did a horrible job investigating the accident. My insurance company hired their own professional accident investigation team to determine who and what caused the accident. It was concluded that the driver of the other car was at fault. The other driver's insurance company tried to give me a small settlement amount by sending me a check and asking me to sign a release which I did not do. My wife and I are still unsure of how long I will need medical care and rehabilitation.
My auto accident has impacted my life and the life of my wife in numeroous ways. She lost a little over a month of work to be with me in the hospital. She has also lost time at work from taking care of me for the follow-up surgeries. The trauma of the accident has affected me not only physically but mentally. I am currently battling severe depression.
My medical bills exceed $300,000, my car was totaled, I have had to return to the hospital for additional stays due to infections that have developed. It's been nearly a year and I am still experiencing a lot of pain. I am also going to counseling to deal with the depression. I'm not sure how long I will need to keep doing that.
Prior to the accident, I was attending college to further my education, but I have had to post-pone that as a result of all my on-going problems. We need help to figure all this out and to take proper action so we can cover all the past, present and future costs and expenses associated with the accident.
